I presently have a PC, with windows XP. If I decide I want a new computer, I would like to know the differance before I walk into a store, & some young kid is trying to sell me what I really do not need. Righ now, I basically use the computer for simple tasks. Like emailing, searching the web, updated info on news & sports, playing fantasy sports. I do not even play games, watch videos, or down-load any music on my PC. I am not planning on buying right now, but maybe with-in 1-2 years.

My pc has two slots for memory chips, one of them empty. Because of the difference in RAM, should I remove the existing 256MN RAM chip when I insert the 512MB RAM chip? I vaguely and uncertainly remember reading somewhere that using such dissimilar RAM chips in a pc involves a trade off. What trade off is there, if any, having the two above chips in a pc? Not ready yet to go to 1GB since my Windows Task Manager indicates I use, at most, about 600 MB of RAM. My pc uses the Windows XP operating system. I use my pc primarily for word processing and news, not for games and video, which do need a lot of RAM.

Any thoughts on my question would be appreciated
