First open up your computer and reseat your graphics card in the slot.Take it out blow it off with some air and put it back in the same slot. Also make sure the monitor is connected well.
This is assuming it is not onboard video.
If things are still messed up you might try reinstalling the drivers.
If that doesnt work you will need to bring it in somewhere unless you have an extra monitor to test out. If the problem exist witht eh other monitor the chances are its the video card and it will need to be replaced.

It could be a few things. First, I would suspect the m,onitor, especially if the monitor is as old as the computer. Try borrowing a monitor from a friend and try it on your computer for a few minutes and see how it works.
The second problem could be the cable that goes from the computer to the monitor, but typically this is part of the monitor, so go back to comment #1.
Third, you need to know if the computer uses a video card or on-board video. During the timeframe that your computer was built, many if not most motherboards had a on-board video rather than a separate card. If on-board video, then buying a video card may resolve the issue(assuming that it is not the monitor).
If there is a video card, trying ensuring that it is securely seated and ensure that the connectors are in good shape and properly connected (turn off the computer first).

well the inverted colors could be a bent pen in the monitor connector but if your icons are disappearing then it could be your card but I doubt it. it’s probably a combination. turn off your machine and unplug the monitor from the back of your computer and check that there are no bent pins in the connector that goes to the monitor.
and the icons disappearing sounds like a buggy explorer try upgrading to a newer version of explorer.
or if you have the latest version then reinstall it

ma’am, pictures on your monitor are basically supported by the video hardware and memory of you cpu whichever type of computer you are using. memory affects mostly the display on your monitor and your computer may tend to shut off if the memory installed is low and can no longer save or open added files. have it check for memory size. maybe it’s too low. if 128M, get 256M or higher. your video hardware also helps to enable clearer and better performance. as an advice though, get a directx 8 or higher video card.

All of the previous answers are good, I would also like to give my 2 cents.
Most monitors will out live it’s usefullness before it goes bad (for most cases) There are tons of old 13/15 inch monitors from the 80′s still going strong…
Some questions, what kind of graphics card do you have…instead of getting more RAM how about a new video card..
I had a 64mb video card up until xmas (got whole new system) it was running everything under the sun just fine…While this is considered old/too low it served me well and based on what you said this size should be fine…
If you have an intergrated video, then yes, get more ram
There have been viruses that could be causing this. make sure you have a good anti-virus program and up to date definitions.
Anywho hope this helps..
