Any problem adding a 512MB RAM chip to a pc with a 256MB RAM chip?

If you add the 512 MB Ram into the empty slot on your mainboard you will have 768 MB Ram installed. You will not have any compatibility issues. The only thing is if you have some slower ram in there the other piece will revert to that speed

it depends on weather or not your mem slots are DDR or not, but generally you can handle a 512 and 256, but if you only have 2 slots, i doubt you have DDR, it when you have 4 slots then DDR comes into play
no speed loss will occur
so as long as the timings and speed of the chip matches the FSB of the memory bus

you have to install memory in pairs. you can have a single slot but if you use the second slot the memory would have to be the same. also be sure you get the proper type of memory. if you want to put in a 512 you will have to remove the 256. or you will have to get a second 512 and replace the 256.
